What is an XYZ file?

An .XYZ file is a plain-text format used to store 3D point cloud data. Each line represents a single point in 3D space described by its X, Y, and Z coordinates. Some XYZ files also include optional RGB columns for colour information.

XYZ files are commonly produced by LiDAR scanners, photogrammetry software, CAD applications, and molecular modelling tools. The format is valued for its simplicity and broad compatibility with tools like MeshLab, CloudCompare, and Open3D.

Our converter renders these 3D points onto a 2D canvas with heatmap or RGB colouring, producing high-quality images you can share, embed, or publish — all without installing any software or uploading your data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What XYZ file formats are supported?

Standard XYZ point cloud files with whitespace-separated X Y Z columns. Files with optional RGB colour values (6 columns) are also supported and will render in colour.

Is there a file size limit?

Since conversion is entirely client-side, the only limit is your browser's available memory. Files with millions of points are typically handled well on modern devices.

What is the difference between formats?

JPG produces smaller file sizes (ideal for sharing) but uses lossy compression. PNG is lossless and preserves every pixel. WebP provides the best balance of compression and quality.

Can I convert multiple XYZ files at once?

Yes! You can upload multiple .xyz files and convert them in a single batch. Download results separately or use "Download All" to get all converted files at once.

Are my XYZ files uploaded to your servers?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the FileReader and Canvas APIs. Your files are never sent to or stored on any server.

What does the rendered image look like?

The converter renders a top-down 2D view of your point cloud. Points are coloured using a depth-based heatmap (blue = far, orange = near). If your XYZ file includes RGB data, the actual colours are used instead.
